As we get into deeper and deeper cold there are certain things we have to do to keep systems moving forward. The compost generated by our chickens normally moves out to gardens pretty early on, without letting it 'age' for a prolonged time. In the winter we can't simply move compost everywhere since the ground is frozen and covered in snow!
We want to rest, or age our compost for the winter so it is more mellow and ready by spring, but just sitting out it would freeze solid.
I share some ideas on ways to protect a compost pile in a cold climate for the winter. Just some ideas that have worked well for us... Would love to hear from folks other systems that have been good for them.
