In trouble with Swedish authorities for burning the works of Martin Luther and other religious disagreements with the state church, in 1846, Eric Janson led over 1,000 followers from Sweden to the United States.
The commune on the Illinois prairie lived in dugouts while they farmed and built. Celibacy was enforced for the first years, until adequate housing and other infrastructure could support a growing population.
The fifteen years of communal living created a thriving Midwestern community that continued to thrive long after the Utopian community dissolved in 1862.
