Legendary Country Songwriter Hugh Prestwood’s Tragic Final Days—and the Shocking Way the Industry Saved Him
Legendary country songwriter Hugh Prestwood, known for hits like "The Sound of Goodbye" and "Ghost in This House," passed away on September 22, 2024, at 82. Born in El Paso, Texas, Prestwood's career soared in 1978 when Judy Collins recorded his song "Hard Time for Lovers." Despite living in New York, away from Nashville, he penned songs for stars like Crystal Gayle, Randy Travis, Shenandoah, and Alison Krauss. In 2006, Prestwood was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. However, by 2022, he faced financial hardship, selling his music catalog and losing his home. The country music community rallied, raising over $120,000 through GoFundMe to help Prestwood and his wife, Judy Ahrens. His story highlights the struggles many veteran songwriters face today. Prestwood is survived by his wife, son Bryan, and daughter Jennifer.
