Gastric ultrasound (GUS) is part of the spectrum of the Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) examination commonly performed in the perioperative period as well as in the ICU.
Many patients who have altered mental status in the perioperative period or in the ICU, or have gastroparesis and delayed stomach emptying are high risk cases who may aspirate stomach contents and subsequently develop aspiration pneumonia, which greatly increases morbidity and mortality.
A simple GUS scan can make the perioperative physician aware of the volume and nature of the gastric contents and help prevent complications and improve patient outcomes.
