This week on Sundays With Sully we are discussing Scan Struts deck seal. A great piece of equipment for anyone looking to run wires through exposed elements areas.
We're talking Scan strut. We're talking cable seals. We do a lot of refits here, along with all the new builds and everything else. And what happens is we get some of these refit jobs when we get under the hardtop where the cables have gone through for whatever your VHF, your radar, you know, all your hard top mounted accessories. The old traditional way was drill a hole, pull your wire through, fill it, fill that area back up. You load it all up, put a clamshell over the top of it, and you send it home and you forget about it. And lo and behold, five years later, the UV has gotten into it, The sun's gotten on it, the cable's been bent over in there, it's degraded. We go in there to do a refit, and now we find out that the coring in that area is bad as well. And now we've got fiberglass work on top of it. Never any fun to make that phone call. So this helps mitigate that for the future. So that's why we use our new installs and also we're doing the refit. So what is it? What do we use it? Well, it's a cable seal. It's a deck gland from Scan strut, but it's really got some nice bulk in heft to it. Well, nice marine stainless design here. We'll go ahead and blow this thing apart here real quick so you can kind of see what the inner workings are of this and, you know, explain why we're really this is a good way to go. Nice part about this is it's a very simple three piece design. You've got four screws. You saw I just kind of undid there, flip it over, come out my hand with all of those. Put those in there. You've got this bottom ring. This is actually what gets mounted down to the deck. So you've got this side here, which if you want to do the included adhesive ring gasket, you put that right on there. So it's got the channels in there. So if you want to go ahead and use your life cork 1500 and sinker flex or whatever it is you want to use, you can go ahead and just bed, just this piece you no longer. This will help bond it but is also has here screws included. And you see that there's also four recessed spots for these self tappers to go in to the deck so you can go ahead grab that right on into the deck. Now you've got a nice big hole to run your cables through, but hey, gotta keep the water out. Right? This is a removable insert from here. And you can kind of see now just how nice this is. It's a really nice machined fitting designed here for you. And this has a it comes with this gland in it. It also comes with this blank. Nice part about this is you can run your cable through it. It's already slipped right here like that. You can run your cable through with the end on slide your cable in, crimp it on in there, Get a nice tight seal on it and you're good to go. Yeah. Cable's not the size you want. You can take this one drill hole through the middle of the slit, or you can do, you know, four holes in the four smaller cables. And you want to use just one deck gland, you have that option with this. This is also available in smaller sizes. It's not just this one big size. They've got a bunch of different sizes available. And here's a little tip for you as you're putting these together. If you're using them, mount this on the deck, pull your wires through, then pull your wire through this, then through this. I can't tell you how many times I've seen it. I'm guilty of it myself. You go ahead. You put your wire through this. You get your wire pulled through this. You get ready to go. Drive it down on the deck. And lo and behold, this is still sitting over here. So save yourself some time. Bolt that thing down there. Just get it out of the way. It doesn't need to come back out. And then you're good to go. So that's all I got for this week's Sundays with Sully. Like I said, getting this studio slash bar all set up here and hopefully, I don't know, six months, nine months from now, maybe don't know, be able to get people in the studio and have a little interview time and talk shop about some things. And what I want to know from you guys is what do you guys want to see? I'm doing this marine tech stuff and shiny things like that. You know, I'm going up. You guys wanna see some sea trials? You want to see, you know, more stuff about Sounders VHF, DSC calling? What does that little red button mean on your VHF? I'm here to answer your guys questions and if you guys better inform boaters so that you can make better informed choices when it comes to your marine technology and boating needs. So that's all I got for this week's Sundays with Sully. It's got to be a cocktail hour out here somewhere. I'm going to go find it. So till next time, guys. Peace.
