Nicknamed the ‘Gaza Metro’, Hamas has spent years building a labyrinth of tunnels underneath its territory. The Israeli military estimates there may be around 300 miles of tunnels, which are up to 45 metres deep in parts.

Many of the tunnels are reinforced with concrete. The main communications tunnels are reportedly large enough to ride through on a motorcycle. Hamas uses these tunnels to shelter from Israeli airstrikes, stockpile weapons and launch hit-and-run attacks on Israeli troops.

Footage released by Hamas on Tuesday apparently shows fighters emerging from a tunnel to attack Israeli forces.

At the heart of the tunnel networks are underground command and control centres, from which Hamas commanders coordinate their attacks. Destroying one of these control centres, Israel claims, was the reason for the deadly strike on the Jabalia refugee camp on Tuesday. Dozens were killed, including civilians, but Israel says it killed a commander and a contingent of Hamas fighters who were hiding underground. Hamas later revealed that seven hostages the group had kidnapped were also killed in the strike.

As Israel pushes deeper into Gaza, its forces are becoming more and more exposed to Hamas attacks launched from the tunnel network. But the Israeli military says it won’t risk sending its troops into the tunnels.

Instead, it claims it will turn the tunnels into ‘death-traps’ for the Hamas fighters inside, smoking them out and forcing them to emerge into the firing line of Israeli troops.
