He placed a large iron bucket filled with dry river sand on top of his woodstove every evening. Sand has a high volumetric heat capacity. While the iron stove cooled down 30 minutes after the fire died, the dense sand mass stored the energy and released it slowly. It acted as a "thermal battery," keeping the room comfortable for 6–8 hours after the fire went out, effectively turning a cheap metal stove into a masonry heater.
