A bottleneck is the resource, process step, or constraint with the lowest effective capacity that limits the throughput of an entire system.
In operations and supply chains, overall performance cannot exceed the bottleneck’s capacity, regardless of how much capacity exists elsewhere.
A system consists of:
Inputs (demand, materials)
Process steps (resources)
Outputs (products/services)
The slowest or most constrained step governs:
Throughput
Lead time
Work-in-process (WIP)
Service level
Purpose (Why bottlenecks matter)
Identify what truly limits performance
Focus improvement efforts where they actually increase output
Avoid wasting investment on non-constraints
Enable reliable planning and realistic commitments
