“Sound of Metal” lead actor Riz Ahmed has gotten lots of Oscar buzz for playing a heavy metal drummer who loses his hearing, but we shouldn’t underestimate his co-stars in the character-driven indie drama. Specifically, Paul Raci just won Best Supporting Actor from the Boston Society of Film Critics when those northeastern journalists announced their picks on December 13. He has been climbing in our Oscar odds too.

Raci plays Joe, who counsels Ahmed’s character, Ruben, on his deafness and his addictions. Raci is a longtime character actor, and he’s also the child of deaf parents who is fluent in American sign language, lending the role added authenticity. Also, mentor roles have been popular with awards voters in the past: consider previous Best Supporting Actor Oscar champs Morgan Freeman (“Million Dollar Baby”), J.K. Simmons (“Whiplash”) and Mahershala Ali (“Moonlight”).
