This video explains why I am attempting to become an Orthodox Christian after a long health crisis with my wife at home.
I explain my movement toward Orthodox Christianity as emerging out of the prolonged crisis surrounding my wife’s severe illness and the sustained pressures of caregiving and medical complexity. That period forced a maturation in me and redirected my attention toward spiritual reality. Although I had been skeptical of Christianity, lived experience gradually oriented me toward Jesus, particularly through the concrete demand to remain present, faithful, and self-giving for my wife.
I found Protestant and Roman Catholic expressions unsatisfying—either superficial, overly rigid, or moralistic. My brother pointed me toward the Orthodox Church, which immediately resonated because of its embrace of mystery, its relational orientation toward Christ, and its theological depth. My first Orthodox liturgy felt like entry into an ancient, living world: incense, icons, chant, and a seriousness of devotion that was unmistakable.
This movement also cohered with my philosophical work, especially my published arguments for consciousness as primary. I recognized that my earlier rejection of God becoming man reflected a form of intellectual closure rather than insight. The Orthodox understanding of the Logos—Christ as the divine, relational ground of creation—proved both philosophically compelling and existentially convincing.
I conclude that Orthodoxy integrates my philosophical and psychological commitments while offering a path of transformation marked by humility, repentance, and the cultivation of love. I am currently pursuing conversion under the guidance of a local priest and understand this not as a conclusion, but as the beginning of a lifelong process of formation.
