The Smolensk Pocket: 310,000 Captured, But It Slowed the German Blitz The next giant encirclement at Smolensk in August 1941 bagged another 310,000 prisoners. However, fierce Soviet resistance within the pocket lasted for weeks. This delay was critical—it stalled the German advance on Moscow for two precious months, pushing the campaign into the autumn mud and winter. The Battle of Smolensk (July-August 1941) is considered the first major setback for the German timetable, allowing Moscow to organize its defenses.
