This Yin Yang Yoga fusion class begins with vinyasa and ends with yin yoga. Yin Yang yoga combines two styles of yoga into one practice. We start with Yang yoga which is dynamic, active, vinyasa yoga, followed by the Yin yoga stretch session, which is slower and with the yoga poses held passively and for longer.
Having been warmed up by the yang section, we can then stretch more easily in the yin yoga section of the class. These gentle holds can calm the mind ready for savasana, the relaxation pose at the end of the yoga class.
Yin and Yang are terms from Chinese culture and represent the opposite forces in nature; opposites which are both necessary and should be balanced to be whole. This fits with the philosophy of yoga which is from Indian culture and means to "yoke" , join or unite. In yoga we seek to join mind, body and spirit. So the concepts of yin and yang and of yoga are similar in the aim for a holistic wellness.
No props are needed for this 40 minute practice which works the entire body. We start with the dynamic (yang) vinyasa yoga flow which helps to increase strength, flexibility and endurance. Then after a couple of calming balance poses, we get to the yin yoga section which uses passive poses to work more on your joints and connective tissues while soothing your nervous system.
