Savoy Orpheans - Vladivostock (HOT!!)

Описание: The Savoy Orpheans, directed by Carroll Gibbons, play Peter Packay and Davis Bee's hot composition "Vladivostock", featuring excellent solos by Frank Guarente and Carroll Gibbons, plus a nice subtone clarinet solo by an unidentified member of the sax section who was obviously positioned very close to the microphone!

The whole band swings with a decidedly Slavic slant that is dictated by the Belgian songwriting team's homage to the well-known Russian seaport, which is usually spelled "Vladivostok". Packay and Bee - both dance band musicians themselves - specialised in this sort of modernistic dance band style number. Other songs they composed/wrote (either as a team or individually) include High Tension, Hot Bricks and Alabama Mamma. Peter Packay's real name was Pierre Paquet; David Bee used several pseudonyms, including, believe it or not, Ernest Craps!!

This side was originally one of eight - recorded over two sessions (May 4th and July 15th, 1927) - that concentrated on the jazz abilities of the band. They were to be issued on four records as "The Savoy Hot Heads", but six sides were rejected at the very last minute, after labels and stampers were ready for pressing up the records, on the grounds that the performances were not commercial. The two remaining recordings - this one and "Ain't That Too Bad?" (which I uploaded to my YouTube channel only a short while ago) - were issued as by the Savoy Orpheans, the Savoy Hot Heads name having also been dropped. The rejected recordings were: "Sax Appeal" (recorded on both sessions), "Snag It", "Tampeekoe", "Windy City Blues" and "Brotherly Love".
