On recent wildlife training in the desert, we stumbled across a California Kingsnake eating a Rattlesnake... one of the most impressive sights I've come across in the wild.
I was aware of the "kingsnake vs rattlesnake" phenomenon, but was completely stunned at the fact that size of the California kingsnake could be considerably smaller than that of their rattlesnake prey. We were in perfect California kingsnake habitat, at least one of them... scrubby high desert pinyon. I don't know much about kingsnakes, but they are beautiful animals, and seem unlikely to bite unless thoroughly harassed. Apparrelnly kingsnakes, like gopher snakes, will curl and shake their tails when threatened. In dry vegetation, this can produce a sound mimicking a rattlesnake's tail, and is pretty convincing!
