Along the old Hunters Road that runs between Zimbabwe and Botswana lies a small pan, called Sibuyu pan, named for the impressive baobab tree that once stood next to it. Before the completion of the railway in 1904, travellers from Cape Town to Victoria Falls (a journey by horse or ox cart of up to 6 months duration) would stop and camp under the tree. Many inscribed their initials into the tree, and it became something of a landmark for missionaries, explorers and adventurers. In this episode, Gus (the African Plant Hunter) visits the pan in search of this historic tree. As so often happens, things don't go quite according to plan, prompting Gus to reflect on the widely-circulated story that baobabs in southern Africa are dying off as a result of climate change.
