As I discuss in this video, simply having a diagnosis of schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder is NOT enough to convince a Social Security judge that you are disabled under SSA’s rules.


Instead, disability judges look for evidence of severe and recurrent symptoms that would preclude even simple, entry-level work. Knowing this is key for success.


Generally speaking, judges expect to see evidence that you cannot manage basic self-care or manage a household. You cannot organize your time, pay your bills or remember to eat or bathe regularly.


Often claimants struggling with schizophrenia experience visual or auditory hallucinations or suffer from paranoid delusions. Not being able to distinguish between reality and delusions makes it all but impossible to function at home, much less at a job.


Evidence of this type of behavior needs to be in the medical record, or it can come from statements from friends or family who have witnessed this type of behavior.


Judges also expect schizophrenia claimants to be under the care of a psychiatrist who is attempting to find a combination of psychotropic medications to keep symptoms under control.


Often attempts to manage symptoms medically can be an on-going struggle as the medications that worked at one time begin to lose their effectiveness.


Medical and non-medical evidence of behavior inconsistent with employment is the key to winning SSD based on schizoaffective disorder.
