STORYLINE:
The body of former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga, a key figure in African democracy efforts, arrived in Nairobi on Thursday.
Odinga died of a heart attack aged 80 while travelling in India.
The Kenya Airways flight carrying the coffin, which had a special call sign of RAO001 in the late leader’s honour, touched down at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport after the body was repatriated.
Mourners were seen waving twigs as the coffin, draped in the Kenyan flag, was brought out from the hold of the aircraft.
His death on Wednesday was confirmed by Devamatha Hospital in Kerala State, where he was taken after he collapsed during a morning walk. A hospital statement said Odinga didn’t respond to resuscitation efforts.
There were somber scenes at his home in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, where mourners included national leaders. Tributes cited his commitment to democracy.
Odinga had recently signed a political pact with Ruto that saw his opposition party involved in government policy-making and its members appointed to the cabinet.
But his ambition was to become Kenya’s president, and he ran five times over three decades — sometimes with enough support that many believed he might win.
Although Odinga never succeeded in his aim, for many he was a revered figure and statesman whose activism helped steer Kenya into a vibrant multiparty democracy.
President William Ruto declared a seven-day mourning period during which national flags will fly at half-staff, calling Odinga's death an “immense and immeasurable loss.”
Ruto added that a state funeral will be held for Odinga with full military honors.
