How do ships pull up their anchors buried deep under the ocean floor?
Here’s how it works:
When a ship stops, it drops its anchor. The anchor sinks and digs firmly into the seabed, while the heavy chain spreads out flat along the ocean floor.
If waves or currents start pushing the ship, the chain stretches out — and the anchor grips the bottom, keeping the ship steady.
When it’s time to move again, the ship slowly powers forward toward the anchor. Once it’s directly above it, the pull on the chain becomes straight up.
That vertical force breaks the anchor free from the seabed, letting the crew pull it back on board.
