STORYLINE:
The streets of Milan's Chinatown were decorated with red lanterns on Tuesday as the district marked the Lunar New Year, the most important festival in the Chinese calendar.

The date changes each year because it follows the lunar cycle, beginning on the second new moon after the winter solstice, usually between 21 January and 20 February.

Each year is associated with one of 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac.

This year is the Year of the Horse, a symbol traditionally linked to energy, strength and perseverance.

Milan is home to the largest Chinese community in Italy, centred here at Via Paolo Sarpi in the city’s north west.

The neighbourhood has grown over decades into a commercial and cultural hub, particularly for families with roots in China’s Zhejiang province.

During the Lunar New Year, its streets become a focal point for celebrations, drawing residents and tourists alike.

Inside the family run La Ravioleria Sarpi, established in 2015, staff prepared trays of dumplings by hand.

To mark the new year, the restaurant is making special Chinese dumplings filled with pork and pak choi (a typical Chinese green), alongside its usual vegetarian, beef and pork options.

Owner Agie Zhou says the festival holds deep personal and cultural significance.



Among those stopping by was Anna Wolfe from California, visiting Milan for the Winter Olympic Games.
