THE ROYAL AIR FORCE TODAY
The Royal Air Force today is ready fully equipped and trained to react at a moment's notice to meet any likely threat to Britain's interests, or to fulfil its obligations to the NATO Alliance.
The Royal Air Force contributes to all three roles of national defence policy as set out in the 1992 Defence White Paper to:
ensure the protection and security of the United Kingdom and its dependent territories.
insure against any major external threat to the UK and its allies.
contribute to promoting the UK's wider security interests through the maintenance of international peace and security.
The Royal Air Force today flies modern aircraft which can travel far faster than anything on the ground or at sea and, at short notice, they can be moved from one area to another, to operate locally or at long range.
The Royal Air Force today possesses the flexibility to operate in a defensive, offensive, or support role, to meet the prevailing needs.
The Royal Air Force today costs roughly 25% of Britain's annual Defence expenditure budget which, for 1995-96, amounts to a little under £21,720 million.
THE ROYAL AIR FORCE TODAY
The Royal Air Force today is:
a vital insurance for Britain's security and interests. a modern, mobile, highly professional and dedicated Service. a good and caring equal opportunities employer, in tune with the community.
The Royal Air Force today is organised
into three commands:
Strike Command, with its Headquarters at High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire, directs and administers the 'operational teeth' of the RAF - air defence fighters, offensive aircraft, support helicopters, maritime aircraft, air transport aircraft, and air-to-air refueling tankers. The Command is also responsible for RAF forces overseas.
Personnel and Training Command, with its Headquarters at Innsworth, Gloucestershire, is responsible for basic and advanced flying training, initial ground training, RAF personnel management and all Command and Staff training.
Logistics Command, with its Headquarters at Brampton and nearby Wyton in Cambridgeshire, is responsible for engineering, maintenance, supply, distribution and communications.
