I did not believe this image was real when I first saw it. It looks so weird! It's not a spiral galaxy though, it's a star in our own Milky Way galaxy. So what is causing this weird spiral pattern of dust? I go through the physics of carbon stars and the best hypothesis we currently have to explain it.
