A Finnish Laavu is a small structure that travelers can temporarily dwell or taking a rest during their hiking trips in the wilderness. Travelers use Laavu as a shelter during fishing or hiking trips. Travelers can make a campfire with the already built structure at Laavu. Also, travelers use Laavu as a stop to take a rest and cookout along trails during the daytime. In Rovaniemi, there are several Laavus nearby the city center and residential area. Since I have studied at the University of Lapland, I have been to Laavu alone quite often. Once, I went to Lavvu in the afternoon and saw two young guys after school came to Laavu. One of the kids took out his axe from his backpack, started to chop wood, and made fire. Even though I could not speak Finnish, I could see the two guys had a heart-to-heart talk. Personally, it is interesting to see such scenarios that locals commonly bring their axe or puukko, chopping wood, having a cup of coffee in the wild. I appreciate this kind of lifestyle during my study here. Therefore, I documented my experience that I had my breakfast with the magnificent view at Lavvu.
The video is filmed on 26 March 2021, my favorite winter springtime in Rovaniemi. The story starts from a beautiful morning with birds chirping. I went to Laavu by bicycle even though there was still snow. I took some firewood which is stored at supplemented the Laavu place. The dead and dry grasses were collected before making fire. Then, I used a puukko chopped firewood and feather stick to easily start a fire with matches, keep warm. A personal kettle is easily carried and boils coffee handily. The Kuksa, a type of drinking cup which is made from birch burl, is a traditional craft of Sami people. I particularly like to use this type of cup because it will leave traces of use more easily than cups of other materials, and it has to be maintained by walnut oil once it is too dry. After finishing a coffee cup, I skewered bacon on the shaved stick and roasted it on the fire. It is cozy as always when appreciating the magnificent snow-covered lake at breakfast time.
Personally, the experience of staying at Laavu is a travel that is similar to having a cup of juice with my friends at the convenience store nearby my house in my hometown. Rovaniemi is a place where have a nice combination of artificial constructions and nature. Even if fossil fuels have used nowadays, we can still slowly use the sustainably harvested wood to make a fire and experience a simple life.
