EXHIBITION OF EARLY KEYBOARD INSTRUMENTS AT THE OLD CASTLE IN JEVIŠOVICE
Right from its founding in 1919, the Music History Department of the Moravian Museum began collecting not only sheet music and other written materials, but also musical instruments. At present, the Music History Department of the Moravian Museum has more than 560 musical instruments in its collections, a full one tenth of which are keyboard instruments (32 pianos, 2 harpsichords, 3 clavichords, 10 organs, 6 harmoniums, and 1 terpodion). The acquired instruments came to the museum in the condition in which they were found, and in most cases they were not operable or playable. Even instruments in truly catastrophic condition were no exception.
For the restoration project, seven selected organs dating from between the 17th and 19th centuries were entrusted to the organ building company Attentus Qualitatis from Lomnice near Tišnov. Six pianos from the first half of the 19th century were restored by Gert Hecher from Vienna. Four pianos from the beginning of the 19th century went through the restoration workshop of Jan Bečička and Stanislav Hiittl from Bystřec and Hradec Králové. Three pianos from the latter half of the 19th century were restored by Jakub Zahradník's company in Prague. Vojtěch Marčan and Šefl took on the restoration of seven keyboard instruments (a harpsichord, two small pianos, a clavichm:d. a pyramid piano, a square piano, and an upright piano). One especially important clavichord from the first half of the 19th century underwent comprehensive restauration performed by Tomáš Flégr (Prague) and Johann-Gottfried Schmid (Rostock, Germany).
The restored instruments are intended for display at the castle in Jevišovice, thereby creating historically the largest exhibit of its kind in the Czech Republic.
