The RBI has barred banks from offering rupee NDF contracts to corporate clients to curb speculation and stabilise the currency. Lenders may still provide deliverable forex derivative contracts for hedging, provided clients hold no offsetting offshore NDF positions.

Rupee sees worst fall in 12 years

FY26 marked the rupee’s worst year since FY12, falling 9.85 per cent due to foreign outflows and the West Asia conflict. It breached 95/$ in March before closing at 94.81 after RBI intervention. A Business Standard poll sees it sliding to 97/$ if the conflict prolongs.

Bankers suggest a debt moratorium for MSMEs

With the West Asia conflict dragging on, banks have proposed a Covid-style, time-bound moratorium for MSMEs and mid-corporates. They suggested an opt-in framework would help firms manage cash-flow stress without compromising asset quality.

RBI defers capital market norms

The RBI has postponed new capital market exposure norms to July 1, offering temporary relief to brokers. The rules cover lending against shares and financing corporate acquisitions.

RBL Bank deal gets RBI nod

The RBI has approved UAE-based Emirates NBD (ENBD) PJSC’s plan to acquire up to a 74 per cent stake in RBL Bank for $3 billion, marking the largest foreign investment in a domestic bank.
