Our February virtual lecture, given by Cynthia May Sheikholeslami, explored the life of J. Morton Howell, the first American Minister Plenipotentiary to newly independent Egypt, appointed just before the 1922 discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb. Beyond his diplomatic role, Howell had a strong interest in ancient Egypt.
Based on archival research and materials shared by Howell’s great-granddaughter, Mary Howell Cromer, Cynthia also highlighted Howell’s visits to Tutankhamun’s tomb, and his support for Howard Carter during his conflict with Egyptian authorities. Additionally, Howell promoted American interest in Egypt by gifting antiquities to Ohio museums and publishing a book on Egypt's history and his tenure in Cairo.
Mary Howell Cromer joined the program to share personal insights.
