Lou Donaldson, alto sax; Herman Foster, piano; Jeff Fuller, bass; Fukushi Tainaka, drums. with Thomas Gavin, alto saxophone
Gavin and Donaldson became acquainted at North Carolina A and T College in Greensboro, NC, in 1942. Gavin was soon to be inducted into the Navy, where he'd serve in B1, a band comprised of the first African Americans to serve in the modern Navy at rank higher than messman. Donaldson, who was too young to join B1 when Gavin and his buddies enlisted, would eventually join the Navy and serve in bands at Great Lakes, Chicago; Beeville, Texas; and New Orleans, Louisiana. After the war, Gavin began the band at Fayetteville State University.
