Political parties almost entirely rely on corporate donations to fund their election campaign in the local, State and Central elections. The issue of corporate funding has come to light in the US in recent years thanks to Bernie Sanders who had raised the highest amount of money compared to his rivals for the Democratic Party presidential bid, all of which came from individual small donors. Inspite of this, he did not get the ticket which exposed how much influence corporate donors have on elections in the USA.India is no different. However, corporate donations have flown under the radar for far too long. Turns out, the system is designed such that corporate lobbies can be set up to fund candidates who support de-regulation, monopoly, reduction of corporate and other high taxes. This is done through electoral trusts and election bonds. But ordinary citizens cannot set up any such electoral trusts if they want to fund candidates irrespective of party, who would support higher wage, taxation on the rich and other progressive policies.
