Hall of Fame trainer Nick Zito on Commentator (No. 3): Now, that was more like it. Now, its seven-and-a-half, eight weeks (to the Grade 1, $750,000 Whitney, Saratoga Race Course, Saturday, Aug. 8). Let me see how he does because I might even squeeze something in between, maybe a month before. If not, well wait the eight weeks. Dont forget, hes still a New York-bred.
The good thing I liked, the track is not fast. You watch, and see how the race is run. Its a dead track, and he flew home, which is really cool. I kept saying, Come on, let him run, John, let him run, and he did. He went 23 the last quarter. I mean, he was flying. Thats fast, aint it?
At Charles Town (Classic, April 18), he hadnt run in five or six months. And those turns, I think he thought the race was over. He got tired going around that bull ring.
Dont forget, hes carrying 126 pounds. Stud Muffin, he won the New York-bred Classic, hes not a bad horse, neither is Naughty New Yorker. Theres a lot of good things going on.
This is some horse. To come home that fast, I dont care what anybody says, its gratifying. Hes some horse, no matter how you look at it This is what we needed, this is what he needed. You gotta get the confidence built in these horses, you just cant throw them to the wolves. Like I said, the Charles Town thing was big, and we tried it, and its not our style. But, we rebounded.
Johnny said he was like his old self. He meant it too. Let him run the last three-eighths. Galloped out too. He flew!
