Story behind the song:

As everything we do, it all started as a joke. We were at the studio working our own new songs when suddenly through an improvisation we were playing a familiar tune. It was a popular song at the top of the charts the past three years.

The writers, Paul Epworth and Adele, described it as a "dark blues-y gospel disco tune." It is certainly like that.

We thought then of giving a more playful but at the same time more melodramatic & darker side of it. We used the Doo-Wop technique, a style of vocal-based rhythm and blues music developed in African American communities in the 1940s. Our friends were there helping us with their great voices, we recorded it & here it is. Rolling in the Deep.
