Addition is when you put two or more numbers together to get a total. Each number that you add is called an addend. The total is called the sum.

Subtraction is when you take a number away from a larger number. The larger number, or the amount that you start with, is called the minuend. The number you take away is called the subtrahend. The number that is left over, or the answer in a subtraction equation, is called the difference.
