Four American Folk Song Fantasias, Op. 81 for Piano by Philip R. Standel is a collection of separate, piano pieces, each one, based on a well known American folk song. Well…, actually No. 2 of the collection uses three folk song waltz tunes (On Top of Old Smokey, Down in the Valley, Beautiful Brown Eyes) instead of one folk song.
In 2021, I wrote an orchestral suite Four American Folk Songs, Op. 53. A number of listeners said they enjoyed them and encouraged me to write more like it. That being the case, I decided to write a second set. But something went awry. After I selected the four folk songs, I began drafting some notes of the songs in piano score. It did not take too long before it began to look like I would write them as “flashy” pieces for piano rather than for orchestra. And so, I decided that is what I would do; they would be short, difficult piano pieces intended for use as recital encores.
Each song is a set of variations and most have a transition section between variations. The whole set takes about 20 minutes to perform, but they are not expected to be played as a set. They are just a collection of four pieces related by ‘accidents' of American history.
