Allagma (2025) is a generative composition for MIDI-controlled instruments.
Recording at Logos Foundation in Ghent, Belgium. Piano vorsetzer built by Godfried-Willem Raes.
Rather than presenting a fixed score, Allagma exists as a compositional system that produces a new realisation every time it is run. The system operates in two stages.
First, it prompts a large-language-model agent to design its own vocabulary of Performative Transaction (PT) features—modular operations that shape pitch, rhythm, articulation, and other musical parameters. This vocabulary is generated, evaluated, and refined by the agent itself, and stored on the Decentralised Creative Network (DCN) as reusable compositional modules.
In the second stage, the newly created vocabulary becomes the material for the piece. Each feature is executed repeatedly as a PT, producing streams of MIDI data—pitch, timing, duration, velocity, and more—from varied seeds and transformation offsets. The language model then acts as a scheduler, analysing the resulting fragments and deciding how they will unfold in time: when episodes should start or return, when silences occur, and how overlapping textures interweave. The final product is a single continuous MIDI sequence, sent directly to the robotic instruments for live performance.
Every run of Allagma therefore yields a distinct version of the piece, while maintaining the procedural identity of the underlying system. This method exemplifies allagmatic composition—a practice in which the artwork lies in the evolving operational framework rather than in any single outcome.
