Standing in their way were the reigning champions and Asian powerhouses, DPR Korea. Under a tropical downpour in Chengdu, China, the two sides played out a grueling battle. Australia took the lead through a 16-year-old Sam Kerr, who with this day startet a legendary career. Although DPR Korea found an equaliser in the 73rd minute to force extra time, the deadlock couldn't be broken after 120 minutes. In a penalty shootout, Australian goalkeeper Melissa Barbieri made a crucial save before 19-year-old Kyah Simon stepped up to bury the winning penalty, securing a 5-4 victory.
