Factions Unite to Give Lango Leader a 'Decent' Send-Off, Burial Set for November 22
LIRA, Uganda– In a powerful display of reconciliation, the often-divided cultural leadership of Lango has declared a unified front to give their late leader, Won Nyaci Yosam Odur Ebii, a dignified burial on November 22, 2025.
Cultural leaders and family of the late Won Nyaci Yosam Odur Ebii call for an end to divisive rhetoric, emphasizing a collective and dignified burial.
The announcement, made at a press briefing at the Grand Pacific Hotel on Saturday, saw leaders from both the Lango Cultural Foundation (LCF) and the Lango Cultural Institution set aside their differences, urging the community to focus on collective mourning and honor.
“All the clans agree to bury the Won Nyaci in a decent way,” declared Dr. Lorry Lawrence Ocen, Speaker of the Lango Cultural Foundation and chairperson of the burial committee.
He revealed that a joint communique had been issued, confirming the burial would proceed collaboratively and “without the issue of cultural interference.”
Dr. Ocen directly addressed those fueling discord, stating, “He urged individuals spreading messages of disunity on radio stations and social media to immediately cease such acts.”
The call for unity was echoed across the leadership spectrum. Professor Willy Okullu, Prime Minister of the Lango Cultural Institution, confirmed the consensus, noting that the death of Yosam Odur Ebii should be a catalyst for unity, not segregation.
“This is the first of its kind that unity should prevail so that Lango move forward,” Professor Okullu said, passionately calling upon the community to prepare for the burial.
Adding a poignant touch, Rt. Hon. Ogwal Oyee Fedrick, the acting Won Nyaci of the LCF, extended an olive branch. “For our friends in Lango Cultural Institution, we are united with them in order to give Yosam a decent send-off,” he affirmed. He urged the community to turn their past praises for the late leader into action during the burial week.
The commitment was firmly supported by the family. Anthony Olobo Odur, son of the late Won Nyaci, confirmed the family's agreement for a joint burial and commended the cultural institutions for their collaborative planning. “Come without fear and stand with us,” he pleaded, a statement that underscored previous tensions.
The spirit of unity was further cemented by a tangible gesture from Bosco Ogwang Edola, Minister of Finance under Dr. Moses Micheal Odongo Okune. He contributed one million shillings cash to the burial fund and called upon all 190 Lango clans to unite.
“From tomorrow, we don’t want rumors; come to Grand Pacific Hotel for a meeting which is taking place daily,” Mr. Edola stated, signaling a new, transparent chapter in the preparations.
The unified stance marks a significant moment for Lango, signaling a strong intent to honor their late leader with dignity and use the occasion as a stepping stone towards lasting reconciliation within the community.
