What we're talking about here is how to improve performance reviews and performance management feedback coaching with your employees – how do we make it a better experience? Well, there are two elements to providing feedback.
One is frequency. Employees want to get frequent feedback. They want to know what they're doing is right or wrong immediately, so they can either course correct or know that they finally have mastered that particular stretch of the journey and they can move on to learning more and trying new things.
Secondly, we always want to provide feedback based on building upon people's strengths. Employees do not like having a strengths/weaknesses approach to feedback; they're not a human SWOT analysis. Rather we want to say, ‘Here are the things that you're great at and here are areas where we can continue to build upon those strengths and go farther’.
Employees want to receive credit recognition for what they've already accomplished and they're more than happy to look at where they need to go next and know that the journey is incomplete.
Make sure that you give people feedback often. Make sure that the feedback is timely, based on new learnings or new experiences. Make sure that you're always creating an environment where you're helping an individual to understand that you're building upon their strengths and that that'll be the continual process for providing them feedback and building on those particular successes.
