Conventional wisdom says third-party candidates like Jill Stein and Cornel West help Republicans by pulling left-leaning voters away from Democrats. But what if conventional wisdom is wrong?
In a recent FairVote poll, 66% of Jill Stein voters said they’d vote for Trump if Stein weren’t on the ballot—the highest support for Trump out of the major third-party candidates this year.
So what’s going on? Years of Democratic efforts to kick Green Party candidates off the ballot might be turning natural allies into opponents. It’s a big flaw in our winner-take-all system—where coalition-building is discouraged, and voters feel unheard.
This is where ranked-choice voting comes in. RCV would let Green Party candidates support their preferred major party candidate, making elections fairer and reducing the need for courtroom battles over ballot access.
