At least ten members of a family lost their lives after being swept away by strong river currents while collecting freshwater mussels, locally called “malvi,” in Karnataka’s Uttara Kannada district. The incident occurred near Shirali village in Bhatkal taluk during heavy rainfall. Rescue operations are ongoing as several others were also injured and missing. Both the Prime Minister and Karnataka Chief Minister have announced compensation for the victims’ families.
