"We learnt that the Grand Jury has indicted him, and is already sending him back to court. In such a case, in France, there would be an investigative judge carrying hearings, with the lawyers representing the plaintiff and the defendant, with confrontations, written documents, etc. In the United States, you have a Grand Jury which has heard only the version of the victim. Maybe, I wouldn't be surprised, there has been a few police officers who came to tell under oath about their findings. We haven't heard Mr. Strauss-Kahn and anyway his lawyer doesn't have a say in the matter. So it is incredible. Now we understand that the accusatory procedure is only about accusations. It is a steamroller which is launched against the suspect, no matter if he is guilty or innocent."

"The advantage of the (American) judicial system is that Mr. Strauss-Kahn has finally been released and pretty quickly in fact. In France, taking into account that justice would have thought the accusations were justified as there would have already been an investigation and a written track record - I am not sure that Mr. Strauss-Khan would have been released. That is very clear."

"It is up to the defence to discover the evidence that the prosecutor could have and that he would not have shared spontaneously. For French lawyers especially, this is inconceivable. In our judicial system, everything is in the file. I don't need to go and ask the investigative judge to go and give me the file from his cupboard. I don't need to write to the prosecutor to ask him to tell me about elements he has in his procedure. When an investigative judge is appointed, all the elements are in the dossier."

STORYLINE:
A French lawyer described former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn on Friday as being "in the jaws of the monster", as he faces trial on attempted-rape charges.
A New York judge granted Strauss-Kahn bail for one (m) million US dollars on Thursday night, on the condition he be confined to a New York apartment under armed guard while he awaits trial.
The banker is accused of attacking a 32-year-old housekeeper on Saturday at his 3-thousand US dollar a-night hotel suite.
The West African immigrant told police that he chased her down a hallway, forced her to perform oral sex and tried to remove her stockings.
The bail decision came less than a day after Strauss-Kahn resigned as managing director of the International Monetary Fund, the powerful organisation that makes emergency loans to countries in financial crisis.
Dominique Inchauspe, a French lawyer since 1983, has studied the Anglo-Saxon judicial systems and compared them to the French judicial system in a recent book he published called "Miscarriage of justice".
He described the case as "a steamroller which is launched against the suspect, no matter if he is guilty or innocent".
