“Oregon Field Guide” producer Ian McCluskey had the opportunity to visit a special workshop at Oregon State University. He was surprised to see engineering students working on a variety of projects, including human-powered submarines, potential Mars rovers, and projects that tap the ancient craft of blacksmithing. However, what McCluskey was really here for was ... wait for it ... concrete canoes! Yes, concrete can indeed float, but achieving this requires skill, strategy, and engineering know-how. The OSU team is preparing to compete against students from other universities in an annual concrete canoe race this spring. May the best concrete canoe win (or at least float)!
