This was a test to help me save space on memory cards and the faff of removing the GoPro from the media mod housing to change memory cards whilst motovlogging. Also to free up space on SSD drives.
Most of my footage is uploaded to YouTube so my theory is as long as it looks good on there all is OK.
To my surprise, there is hardly any difference in the footage whilst watching it on a 4K UHD TV, and as most YouTube viewing is consumed on Phones and Tablets no difference should be seen.
So from now on I'm recording the footage in 1080p 60 FPS and Upscaling in FCPX
TRY IT AND SEE!!
I recorded the same 3 shots with the Hero 9 using the following resolution settings:
1080p - 60fps
2.7k - 60fps
4k - 60fps
All other settings the same in each shot :
Lens : wide
Hypersmooth : on
Bitrate : high
Shutter : auto
EV comp -0.5
white balance : auto
ISO min : 100
ISO max :1600
Sharpness : medium
colour : GoPro
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I upscaled this footage in Final cut X.
I started a new project with the settings: ~~4K 60 fps ----Apple pro res 422
After editing your footage ~
1. Save the file as Masterfile ( wherever you normally save to)
2. Click on settings ~
Choose ---- Format : Computer
Video Codec : H.264 Better quality
Resolution 3840 x 2160
It will be an MP4 file (which YouTube likes)
3. Now upload to YouTube
It will now have SD HD 4K viewing formats on YouTube
Enjoy great 4K Footage!!!!
Hope this helps someone, give me a thumbs up if you find this useful
