And through 43 years of service, they came to represent so much to so many people. So much so that their withdrawal in 2019 from the two routes they first called home and made their own for nearly half a century – the Great Western Main Line and the East Coast Main Line – was so much more than just an old train being replaced by a new one. It became a retirement tour full of emotion and celebration, a genuine end of an era moment. And what better tribute to a legend than a ride on one of the most epic rail journeys in all of Britain. Eight hours and nearly 600 miles between London and Inverness, this is the Highland Chieftain – by HST!
