Important information on the climate battery: The concept is enormously overrated, please do not install a climate battery into your greenhouse, better build the rest of the house well. A climate battery does not store warmth for winter! I tested it one winter turned on and one turned off - there was no difference. The main thing for staying frost free yearround is to go at least 0,5m below ground with your beds. But you do not want to go too deep, because the low winter light won`t make it to your plants then. The concept for a walipini developed somewhere in Peru where the sun stands high all year. So don`t go too deep if your property is far away from the equator!
Our Passive Solar Greenhouse was built from August to October 2019. We are located in Upper Austria, near the European Alps, 427m above seelevel. The main building materials are timber and clay. For glazing we used Polycarbonate 25mm. The Greenhouse provides 24m² of growing space and 6m² toolshed. A 65m² pond in front of the greenhouse reflects sunlight into the greenhouse and helps keeping it warm in cold months.
