Julia Wade appeared in court for sentencing after entering a plea of guilty to aggravated perjury, a third-degree felony. The plea agreement allowed probation, but the type and length were left to the judge’s discretion.

Defense attorney Holmes argued strongly for deferred adjudication, noting Wade’s lack of felony history, her stable employment, role as a single parent, and the low-risk evaluation from her pre-sentence investigation. The defense stressed that this was an isolated incident, and that deferred adjudication would allow Wade to prove rehabilitation without a permanent felony conviction. They requested a term of 3–5 years.

The prosecutor, Mr. Coleman, pushed back, stressing that Wade’s lie to the grand jury was not minor — she denied being in a vehicle with a suspect strongly believed to have shot and killed an innocent man at a trail ride. Coleman argued that her dishonesty obstructed justice and hindered the murder investigation. While he acknowledged probation was necessary under the circumstances, he insisted it should be straight probation with a felony conviction on her record.

The judge weighed both sides. While recognizing the seriousness of Wade’s lie in connection to an unsolved homicide, the court also acknowledged her otherwise clean record and positive background. Ultimately, the judge granted deferred adjudication probation for 10 years, with a $1,000 fine and strict conditions. Wade is prohibited from contacting the individuals who were in the vehicle at the time of the murder.

The judge emphasized this was Wade’s one chance — any violation could result in conviction and up to 10 years in prison. If she completes probation successfully, the case will be dismissed, leaving her without a felony conviction.
