Does your horse have a lot of itching and does it rub its mane and tail off in the summer? Then there is a good chance that he will suffer from summer eczema. Summer eczema is caused by the small Culicoids Robertii mosquitoes. An allergic reaction to the sting of this mosquito causes the itch. A fly rug has fairly large meshes through which this mosquito can sting through. The meshes of an eczema rug are a lot smaller so that the mosquito can no longer sting through it and an allergic reaction is prevented. An eczema rug is therefore slightly warmer than a fly rug so ensure plenty of shade on hot days.
