India’s population just hit 1.46 billion in 2025 — that’s nearly 5 crore more than China—And is officially the world’s most populous country.
But according to the UN report ‘State of the World Population 2025: The Real Fertility Crisis’, there’s something bigger going on. India’s fertility rate has dropped to 1.9, below the replacement level of 2.1. That means, on average, Indian women are having fewer children than needed to keep the population stable over time. We’ll still grow to around 1.7 billion… but then start shrinking in about 40 years.
Back in the 1960s, Indian women had 5 kids. Now? Just 2. Thanks to better education, healthcare, and stronger roles for women. But the UN says the real crisis isn't too many or too few people — it’s that millions still don’t have the power to decide if or when to have children. That’s the real fertility crisis.
What do you think: Should we be talking less about numbers… and more about freedom of choice?
