CEO performance management is a key role of the Board of Directors. CEO's are responsible for executing the strategic plan approved by the Board. Therefore, it's important that the Board measure how well the CEO is performing.
However, CEO's in general tend to push back on evaluations conducted by the Board of Directors. There are several reasons for this. First, they don't feel the Board is close enough to the business to understand their performance. Second, they see that many CEO evaluations measure performance they consider irrelevant. Third, they see the process as negative - catch the CEO doing something wrong - not positive.
We understand why CEO's push back on CEO evaluations. We've been in their shoes. We know that many CEO evaluations are poorly done. However, we also understand how well done evaluations are good for the CEO - and the organization. We work with Boards to develop custom CEO evaluations that are credible and useful; that CEO's will respect; and that provide an on-going benchmark for CEO performance.
