On April 22, 1915, at the Second Battle of Ypres in Belgium, modern warfare entered a new era of horror. The German Army released over 150 tons of chlorine gas, unleashing a deadly green-yellow cloud against French colonial troops—mainly Algerian and Moroccan soldiers. Thousands died choking and blinded, while survivors fled in terror, leaving a gap in the Allied lines. This was the first large-scale use of chemical warfare. Soon after, deadlier gases like phosgene and mustard gas followed, killing and injuring hundreds of thousands before the war ended. Though banned in the 1925 Geneva Protocol, the legacy of Ypres remains a grim reminder of how science can be turned into a weapon of mass destruction.
