Analyzing Milwaukee's Broadband Resilience | Data Science Clinic

Описание: The Internet Innovation Initiative at the University of Chicago’s Data Science Institute worked to realize resilient internet solutions that benefit all communities. In 2020, more than 110,000 children in Chicago lacked access to broadband internet connectivity. Policymakers are attempting to improve internet access, affordability, and literacy. The Internet Innovation Initiative aimed to provide problem-driven measurement data, and analysis, as well as models to evaluate connectivity options and research on social effects of infrastructure investments.

Data Science Clinic students Marleen Buttar, Ethan Hochstieg, Yasmin Shalim, and Charlie Wang worked with the Internet Innovation Initiative team to analyze data gathered on Milwaukee area internet. The team worked to integrate current and legacy databases to provide single, future-proof method for analyzing broadband data, create interactive visualizations to evaluate internet performance across devices and metrics, and combine the data into an integrated dashboard to view all metrics simultaneously.

Applied experiential learning is a core component of the DSI educational mission. The Data Science Clinic provides students with projects that transcend the traditional classroom experience. The Clinic is a project-based course where students work in teams as data scientists with real-world clients under the supervision of mentor instructors. To do this we partner with industry, social impact, civic organizations and research groups for 1 or 2 academic quarters on data science projects. As part of their training, students will be tasked with producing key deliverables, such as data analysis, open source software, as well as final client presentations and research reports.
