My Thoughts On The Song/Chart: While the 1996 album "Load" is often considered to have a mixed reception among Metallica fans, "The Outlaw Torn" i've always felt was a heavily underrated track from the album and a genuinely good Metallica song. The song concludes the album and is one of Metallica's longest tracks.
The song is about losing someone that means a lot to you and desperately seeking a replacement that never comes, which fans has interpretated about it possibly being about the band's late bassist Cliff Burton, or possibly James Hetfield's parents.
James has gone on record to state he's proud of the song and it's among one of his favorites that he's ever written. The song gives off an almost grunge-y vibe to it and is mostly riffage but there is a somewhat interesting Guitar Solo in the middle of the song.
This being an old custom, also has some rather.... interesting charting decisions.
Guitar Solo: 6:22
Song Facts:
The Outlaw Torn is the fourteenth and final song from Metallica's sixth album Load.
At 9:48, it is the longest song on the album and one of the longest songs the band has ever made.
The song expresses the narrator’s deep longing to find a replacement for someone who has died (often interpreted as former Metallica bassist Cliff Burton or Hetfield’s parents). The central message is that this replacement will never come, and one is doomed to wait a lifetime.
Kirk Hammett played the first solo in the middle and James Hetfield played the solo at the end of the song. Since they were running out of room on the CD, Hetfield's solo had to be cut short because no more than 78:59 minutes/seconds can be stored on a normal CD.
On the single "The Memory Remains" (1998), the uncut version of "The Outlaw Torn" is featured. It is 11 minutes long and contains James Hetfield's full solo.
This was later included on their 1999 album S&M with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra.
