Malindi, once the heart of ancient trade, now beats with a different rhythm — the rhythm of youth, art, and healing.
The Broken Calabash is a poetry play born from the coastal soil of Kenya, written by Emmanuel Mwaringa Mae alias Emmas1Poet and directed by Emmas1Poet (and collaborators to Elite Stories and Tales including Anne Wangari alias Anitasha Stalic and Muchiri Chege).
Emmas1Poet is a young Giriama artist using words and performance to confront the silence around Gender-Based Violence.
Through spoken word, music, and movement, this performance transforms pain into dialogue — a call for reflection, unity, and compassion. It draws from the lived experiences of survivors, the strength of communities, and the belief that art can mend what systems overlook.
The story unfolds with data about Gender-Based Violence Recovery Centre (GBVRC) at Coast General Hospital, a pioneering model that provides 24-hour care, counselling, and justice support for survivors in Mombasa. Between 2007 and 2018, the centre has served over 6,500 survivors — most of them children and young women.
The Broken Calabash amplifies their voices.
It asks:
“What are you doing to help end gender-based violence?”
“Are you a healer — or a perpetrator?”
This film is part of the #ArtisticActivism project by Yannek Creatives, where young artists from Malindi turn poetry, theatre, and visual art into instruments of change.
